WarGames: Spoilers Podcast 004

by RickMacMerc (Podcasts NTSC)

This will be a true geek commentary. We're covering John Badham's 1983 film, WarGames, starring Matthew Broderick, Dabney Coleman, John Wood and Ally Sheedy. Your commentators as usual are Bill Douthett and myself, Rick Yaeger, but we will be channelling our "alternate identities" more on this commentary than we have previously. Bill is better known as Digital Bill from the podcast "the Wizards of Technology" and "The Update Wizard" and I have my own web site for Macintosh professionals at MacMerc.com.

The Spoilers will not be geeking unassisted this time around. We have enlisted the help of another technology expert and movie buff, Andy Ihnatko. Andy is best known for his technology column in The Chicago Sun-Times as well as Macworld Magazine's back-page opinion articles. If you doubt is movie commenting powers, consider that Roger Ebert credits him for writing "at least a third" of his Ebert's Little Movie Glossary (highly recommended little book) In short, whether it's technology or cinema, Andy knows his stuff and we are thrilled to have him as our guest on this commentary. (check out The Mac OS Tiger Book by Andy Ihnatko)

Also new for this podcast, we will not be providing notes on the website. We had intended to--we did the research. We even tried to pepper the commentary with it every so often, but once Andy got going it was hard to jump in to talk about some bit of trivia that was not nearly as interesting as what he was saying...or singing. We ended up just winging it and having a hell of a good time. Hope you do too.

Sin City: Spoilers Podcast 003

by RickMacMerc (Podcasts NTSC)

Just over two hours of commentary. Our latest podcast on the site. Days after the DVD hit the streets. Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller's comic anthology film noir. Sin City they call it. I'm staring at the cover. It smells like movies ought to smell ...uhm ...uhr.*cough*

Okay, enough with the hard-boiled monologue for now. Yes, our latest commentary is for Sin City, the movie based on Frank Miller's graphic novel's "The Customer's Always Right," "That Yellow Bastard," "The Hard Goodbye," and "The Big Fat Kill." If you liked the flick, they're well worth the read ...although you'll soon realize, you've seen them faithfully recreated by Rodriguez here.

Sin City is rated R for sustained strong stylized violence, nudity and sexual content including dialogue. But notably, though Sin City has very adult themes and wonderfully strong dialog it doesn't have a lot of strong language...very little in the way of swearing. It fact they use the exclamation "yeesh" more often than any other.

    Happy Birthday Kevin Smith

    by RickMacMerc (Site News)

Our timing couldn't have been much better: we only just posted our commentary of Kevin Smith's Mallrats when I'm informed that is day is, in fact, the man's birthday.Have a good one, dude!

    Mallrats: Spoilers Podcast 002

    by RickMacMerc (Podcasts NTSC)

This time out the Spoilers tackle Kevin Smith's Mallrats. We attempt to look deep into the film, relax our eyes and see the sailboat. This 1995 film marked Smith's induction into mainstream Hollywood... and upon its completion, his departure from it running and screaming. Mallrats features Ben Affleck, Jason Lee and Joey Lauren Adams--three actors who would follow Smith to his third film and his masterpiece, Chasing Amy.

So get yourself a bag of chocolate covered pretzels and a dixie cup of Coke (no ice) and listen in. And now the notes...

    • Takes place on a Friday, the day before the events of Kevin Smith's first movie, Clerks.
    • It was the debut film of Jason Lee, an actor who started out as a professional skateboarder.
    • Numerous references to Smith's previous film, Clerks, as well as prophetic nod to his future films Chasing Amy and Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back.
    • The DVD comes with an excellent commentary track by Kevin Smith, Ben Affleck, Jason Lee, Jason Mewes, Scott Mosier and Vincent Pereira that you should listen to if you haven't already. We'll try not to overlap too much.
    • This film was rated R by the MPAA for nudity, adult themes and numerous "bad swears"
